Effect of Laccase Detoxification on Bioethanol Production from Liquid Fraction of Steam-Pretreated Olive Tree Pruning

During lignocellulosic bioethanol production, the whole slurry obtained by steam explosion is filtered, generating a water-insoluble fraction rich in cellulose which used for saccharification and ethanol fermentation, as well liquid containing solubilised glucose xylose but also some inhibitory by-products (furan derivatives, weak acids phenols), limits its use this purpose. Since utilization of to essential an economically feasible cellulosic process, work studied laccase from Myceliophthora thermophila detoxify steam-pretreated olive tree pruning (OTP) overcome effects these inhibitors. Then, fermentation laccase-treated was evaluated on production different Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains, including Ethanol Red, with capacity ferment not xylose, xylose-fermenting recombinant strain F12. Laccase treatment reduced total phenols content 87% OTP fraction, affecting furan derivatives concentration. Consequently, fermentative behavior both Red F12 strains improved, yields were increased. Moreover, capable utilizing increased (10.1 g/L) compared (8.6 g/L).
